July 4th weekend we reflect upon our nation's independence with family and friends.

Marty Smith (on left) is our warehouse manager who has been a loyal LMI employee for 10 years. His son, Jeremy, holds a special place in the LMI family, especially this time of year.

Jeremy has recently completed his third tour of duty in Iraq. LMI employees have been sending Jeremy care packages for several years. Jeremy keeps us updated through letters and emails. We snapped this photo when Jeremy visited LMI last month. We are so proud of Jeremy!

Kitchen Makeovers- Inspired by Julia Child's Pegboard

An organized kitchen is an inviting kitchen, not only for the "chef" of the house but for anyone who ventures into one of the most used spaces in the home.

Julia Child, in all her graceful, culinary splendor, understood the importance of an organized kitchen. Julia Child used pegboard to keep her kitchen accessible as well as efficient. If it worked for the renowned and beloved Julia Child, then it would work for me.

I have installed Bullet Board metal pegboard in my pantry. And now it is easier than ever to locate my favorite pots, pans, and cooking utensils. And since installing my Bullet Board metal pegboard, I find it much easier to locate items in my cabinets that I don't use as often since they are much less crowded.

Julia Child has inspired millions of people and she inspired me to fall in love with my kitchen, all over again.

Now I look forward to spending time in my kitchen preparing my favorite meals, such as my Sesame Noodle recipe, shown below.

Sesame Noodles

12 ounces, fluid Thin Noodles, Cooked And Drained

¼ cups Soy Sauce

2 Tablespoons Sugar

4 cloves Garlic, Minced

2 Tablespoons Rice Vinegar

3 Tablespoons Pure Sesame Oil

1 teaspoons Hot Chili Oil (more if you like it hot)

2 Tablespoons Hot Water

4 whole Green Onions, Sliced Thin (chives would work, too)

(This recipe is a modified version of the Simple Sesame Noodles recipe by the Pioneer Women.)

Whisk all ingredients (except noodles and green onions) in a bowl.

Pour sauce over warm noodles and toss.
Sprinkle with green onions and toss.
Serve in a bowl with chopsticks.

Ponca City kicked off it's summer in style earlier this month as the 9th Annual Cherokee Strip Corvette Club Show was held on the shores of Lake Ponca.

Garage Vac installs in less than 10 minutes

I received my Garage Vac last Thursday and took it home, intending to wait until Friday afternoon to install it in my detached one-car garage.

After finishing up some yard work and noticing that I still had about an hour of daylight, I cracked open my Garage Vac to investigate how involved the installation would be.

I surveyed the inside of the garage to determine where to best mount the Garage Vac and settled on a wall next to the side door and about five feet from the garage door. I held the vac up in that area to make sure I would have clearance and enough space to change the bag when necessary.

The actual physical installation, (bolting the mounting bracket and hanging the Garage Vac) took approximately 10 minutes. In no time I was vacuuming the inside of my Ford pickup and extremely pleased with the power and performance of the Garage Vac.

The 30 foot hose was more than adequate length to reach out to my drive way to vacuum the truck and light enough that it didn't seem like a chore. All of the included attachments are smartly kept in a caddy bag and each tool is constructed in a way that gives me confidence that I will be using them for a long time.

Best of all, was how quiet the Garage Vac operated. Having it so close to the front of the garage concerned me at first,especially since my garage is less than 20 feet from my neighbors house, but while I was using it, I could hardly hear it outside the open garage door. It was much quieter than that old upright that I previously used.

Along with the blower feature, my Garage Vac is going to get a lot of use, not only in summer, but year around.

Our problems with keeping tools and power tools neat, organized, and easily accessible has been solved by using the Bullet Board metal pegboard. I know my husband was extremely excited to get his on the wall. He played around with where to put the hooks, and had trouble deciding what was important enough to hang on the Bullet Board metal pegboard. Now when asked to grab a tool in order to assist my husband, or for myself ☺, I know exactly where it’s at and find that it’s much easier to put it back in its home, for both of us. The only problem that now lies is that we need more Bullet Board pegboards. I love it in the garage, but could use one in the shed for my gardening tools. The hooks are extremely durable, yet easy to take out and move around if need be. We chose to hang ours vertically, but it could be hung any way you’d like. Back when I was growing up, my Dad would always pass on his knowledge to me on virtually everything, as most fathers do.

Dad was a stickler for doing things right the first time and was always looking for ways to do them more efficiently. Ametek Lamb has answers to your 8 most frequently ask question about central vacuum motors.

1. How many times can brushes be changed and what life can be expected from each change?
Original brush life on Lamb produced vacuum motors will vary considerably from one application to another. Brushes can normally be changed two times before armature and other component replacement is required. On the first brush change you can expect up to 60% of the original life. On the second change, you should receive up to 40% of the original life. After the second change, the commutator is normally worn to the point where further brush replacement is not possible. This applies if brushes are changed before the brush shunt is fully extended. If this is allowed to happen the contact between the brush and the commutator surface will be disturbed, resulting in pitting and other damage tot he commutator surface. Should a commutator be damaged, it should be turned or replaced before the brushes are replaced.

2. When brushes are changed, what is the proper run-in procedure?
To achieve the best performance the brushes should be seated on the commutator before full voltage is applied. After brush change apply 50% to 75% voltage for 30 minutes to accomplish this seating. The motor will return to full performance after an additional 30 to 45 minutes running period at full voltage. Direct application of full voltage after changing brushes will cause arching, commutator pitting and reduce overall life.

3. Will 115V, 60 cycle motors operate from 115V, 50 Cycle input?
Yes. The vacuum motors considered here will operate from 25-60 cycle, A.C. or on D.C.

4. What happens when two or more motors are connected in (air) series?
In this arrangement involving bypass motors, the working air exhaust from the first motor is directed to the fan intake of the second motor, providing for a significant increase in the vacuum performance at small orifice conditions with no appreciable increase in CFM. We don not recommend the used of two through-flow motors in a series connection as the heat from one motor is transferred to the second motors creating an overheated situation.

5. What happens when two or more motors are in (air) parallel?
This arrangement usually involves two or more motors mounted in the cover of a large container. Each motor's fan system is working from the same air space. In this case, air flow (CFM) is significantly increased at a large orifice conditions with no appreciable increase in vacuum.

6. Can 230V motors be operated at 115V?
Yes, on motors of this type, it is usually beneficial from a life standpoint to operate at less than rated voltage. Air performance will, of course, drop off rapidly as you pull back from rated input.

7. What effect does motor speed have on brush life?
Generally speaking, brush life through a direct voltage reduction is tripled by cutting the motor speed in half.

8. What is the relationship of the air watt value to vacuum performance?
The air watt or air power term is a useful description regarding the actual cleaning potential available as a result of air movement (vacuum and airflow) in a vacuum cleaner. This rating could be used in terms of a cleanability rating.

The central vacuum industry has been using 5.1", 5.7", and 7.2" vacuum motors for some time now, but early Vacu Maid units had a 9" fan that was made here in Ponca City and connected to Robbins Myers motor. When we began working with Ametek Lamb for the next generation vacuum motor, we felt a larger diameter motor would return us to the type of life and performance we had in the 60's and 70's. We are super excited about this new central vac motor from Ametek Lamb because it has similar performance with less energy usage. Be sure to check out the new 8.4" vac motor because it has some really innovative features.

Longer Life:
Ametek designed this motor with curved brushes. This gives the motor longer life than the average 7.2". Ametek rates it at 1500 hours. So if you cleaned nearly 2 hours every week this motor will last 15 years. The curved brushes also help to match the life of the commutator to the brush life which basically means you would never replace the brushes. Once the brushes are worn completely, the life of the motor is at an end.

More Efficient
The 8.4 is also the most efficient motor we have. Talk about being "green", it has less loss of energy by using a higher percentage of electrical power that turns into air power. They say that most central vacuum motors are 30% efficient where this new 8.4 is nearly 45% efficient! To calculate a motor's efficiency, we take the air power watts divided by the input power watts.

Cleaner & Quieter
This motor has a foam chamber placed around the top of the motor to catch any carbon dust emitted from the brushes. It also helps to reduce some of the noise made from the motor.

When choosing a central vacuum system it is important to look into the heart of the system.

The vacuum motor is the heart of any central vacuum system. You may not see it, but it is doing all the work. There are many differences between the motors and it is hard to know what to compare. Today we will focus on comparing motor performance.

A central vacuum's ability to clean your home depends on the motors performance. The industry uses Airwatts to help consumers compare central vacuums. Airwatts is measurement of air power and is based on airflow and suction. Many times you will see the airwatts based on peak or maximized airwatts which is calculated by using the maximum voltage. If you truly want to compare motors, we recommend looking at the motor specs at a 5/8" orifice. This opening best illustrates the performance that you will have when cleaning. Basically, the 5/8" orifice is the size of the opening on a cleaning tool.

I returned to my country girl roots and planted a vegetable garden last year. I must confess, though, my garden was heavily laden with fertilizers and pesticides. I am the kind of gal that thinks if a little is good, a lot would be better. I used too much pesticide which killed the good bugs and well as the bad bugs. Because the good bugs were not around to eat the bad bugs, my garden became infested with spider mites. I then used a pesticide that left my tomato plants smelling like diesel fuel for days. I knew at this point I wanted to be kind to the earth by going chemical free with my next garden.

I have composted all winter and I am practicing companion planting this year. Companion planting is based around the idea that certain plants can benefit others when planted next to or near one another. Companion planting, also, benefits certain plants by controlling pests naturally. After countless hours of research on the internet, I have planted the following with my tomatoes: basil and chives to improve the flavor, borage to deter the tomato worm, and marigolds to discourage many insects. Companion gardening won’t solve all the world’s problems, but it does your soul, body, and earth good.

Celebrate the Earth by not using chemical fertilizers and pesticides in your garden. Put the right plant in the right place to save resources. Spread the love by sharing your extra veggies with family and friends.

Side Opening VacuValve Inlet for Central Vacuum

Vaculine a division of Canplas has recently released a new side opening inlet valve for central vacuum systems. They say it is as easy as opening a book. It has a couple of unique features that may be attractive to those selecting an inlet for their walls. You can not see behind the valve from the top. Occasionally we hear feedback that the homeowner doesn't like to see the slight opening of the original vacuvalve. The new one is full opening so it shouldn't get caught on the hose. It will open all the way to the wall. This valve comes in the standard low voltage pin jack style as well as the direct connect Electravalve.

The side opening valve comes with a reversible flange that accommodates different installation requirements: Unlike a traditional valve, the flange of the side opening valve is separate from the body, and therefore, it can be placed either on the left or right of the valve depending on your installation requirements. You can choose to install the flange to the right or to the left and the electrical box will remain at the top.

Central Vacuum Cyclonic In-Spring-ation

Ponca City’s annual spring cleanup time has arrived. This is the time of year the city, (home of Lindsay Manufacturing – Vacu-Maid, Astro-Vac), encourages residents to clean up their yards, homes and garages. So I bought into the idea. I decided my house and garage could benefit from some deep spring cleaning.

Of course, part of this clean-up was vacuuming my floors, upholstery, carpet, and of course emptying out my vac system. I have a split cyclonic central vac, so the debris is collected in DC1200AC dirt canister. The majority of the debris falls into the bottom of the canister, but some fine particles are exhausted to the outside or collected on the lint screen. I have three cats, so the lint screen is where some of their hair collects. I have placed the new PVC coated fiberglass screen – FSF12 & FSF14- to help make cleaning-up the lint tray a breeze.

I lifted off the top of the lid & was wiping the contents, which included pet hair and some lovely pink feathers from a pet toy, and remembered instructions for a really neat Nesting Material Dispenser I had seen on the ‘instructables’ website. They used some curled up wire to construct a "feeder" of nesting materials for the bird to use when they are constructing a nest.

Instead of throwing away the lint from my vac, I decided to put on my creative hat and give the nesting dispenser idea a try. I’m all for recycling and needless to say I am an animal lover – yes, this does include birds.

The results of my effort is below, oh and I added some paper and sticks too. Now I am ready to kick back and relax. My cats and I are ready for some serious bird-watching!
